Trained under the tutelage of Fernando de Castro, one of the last disciples of Ramón y Cajal, he developed his career for almost four decades at the Cajal Institute. Renowned for his findings on neuronal plasticity, in 1992 he was awarded the Rei Jaume I Prize for his studies on the organization of the cerebral cortex.
