Two innovations derived from the European PathoGelTrap project selected by Innovation Radar

Cajal Institute – News

Two innovations patented by the Laboratory of Dr. Mariano Carrión-Vázquez of the Cajal Institute have been selected as “excellent innovations” by Innovation Radar, an instrument of the European Commission to promote technology transfer.

The European project PathoGelTrap, funded under the FET Open program, dedicated to the search for disruptive technologies, has achieved important advances under the scientific coordination of the Laboratory of Dr. Mariano Carrión-Vázquez. This project has generated a patent that includes two innovations recognized by the European Innovation Radar to enhance their transfer.

This project aims to trap pathogens using protein chimeras generated through protein engineering. These chimeras are composed of a specific binding region for pathogens, viruses or bacteria, called “binder”, and a region that forms biomolecular condensates. The latter are particularly abundant in the nervous system, being responsible for the formation of the so-called “membraneless organelles” such as the Cajal Bodies.
